We had a wonderful Shrove Tuesday Pancake Party in Bangsar Lutheran Church tonight. It was a simple program with a light touch of combining the best of Lent and the best of Chinese New Year. I hoped that our gathering was also a kind of reunion dinner too with pancakes as a special of course, but also that BLC is the family for many who are far away from their families, or unable to have a reunion dinner with them. It was great to have the BLC family and friends just enjoy each other (and the food) together. No big agenda, but opening up the space for free interaction.
Of course, Ian did an excellent job explaining briefly on Lent, Shrove Tuesday, the practices of fasting, praying and alms giving during the Lenten season, and little extras here and there.
The Pancake flipping exercise was a wonderful highlight. Especially for those of us who hardly step into the kitchen. As usual Ian does a great demo everytime!
Katharine (Ian’s amazing wonderful wife) did a big bulk of the work in preparation. Others chipped in for cakes, rice, noodles, and even Chinese New year cookies.
It was a good night … a high for me for sure 🙂 I’ll let the pictures do the talking now (the sharper ones by Choo Ki, and more amateur ones by me:-) ).
I really had a good time. And while I know of the many imperfections of BLC, tonight is a night where BLC shone brightly! I love this church …
For the first time ever, I got up early today and made pancakes for my family to celebrate Shrove Tuesday! I’ve never even heard of Shrove Tuesday before, but I’m intentionally trying to tune into the Christian calendar this year, and it was fun to be able to talk about this with my kids and look ahead to Ash Wednesday and Lent.
I don’t have any cool pics, though, so good on ya for posting yours! I’m grateful to God to be a part of the Church with people like you, Sivin.
Creative idea. First time I heard of Shrove Tuesday.
Very nice pics. New camera?
Steve K – The first one I had was last year, introduced by my Brit friends here worshipping with us, Ian and Katharine DeVilliers at his home. This year, I thought let’s do it as a church. And it was great.
Blogpastor – the food part might be the creative bit. And we adapted somewhat for our situation here. But the Shrove Tuesday is an ancient idea 🙂 This is my ancient-future streak at work in ministry … as for Camera, well … the nice pictures were taken by Choo Ki who has a fancy Nikon SLR camera.. I’m still using my faithful Canon A70.
I was happy I came yesterday… Apart from being fed well, it was really enlightening to catch up with old friends and of course, participating in a conversation that was jumping all over the place… That was my Shrove. Yapping away was good therapy. Perhaps now I can shut up joyfully for Lent. Ya Rabb Urham!
Anyways, to the newfound friends i made yesterday, glory be to God forever! Xin Nian Kuai Ler!
